23 Bread Machine Recipes You Have to Try (1)

As an avid bread-baker, I had a love-hate relationship with my breadmaker for a few years. It tends to take some of the fun, hands-on aspects of bread baking away and often replaces it with… well, mediocre bread.

Or, so I thought!

And, as it would appear on comments on Instagram and Pinterest, many people are experiencing the same lackluster results with their bread machine loaves.

I spent some time reading and watching videos about different models and I’ve developed several recipes that come out delicious every time. During this time, I learned the tricks for making delicious bread machine bread. You can read more about it in my jalapeno bread machine recipe post.

The best tip I can give you is to treat your dough with as much care as you would if you were doing it all by hand. Peek at it while it kneads. Check on it while it’s rising. Add flour, oil, or water if needed. This will literally solve so many problems people are having.

Bread baking is an art form. Bread machines certainly do take a lot of the work out for us, but it’s still a finicky craft. You have to nurture the process.

Armed with that knowledge, I set you free, my children! Explore all that your bread machine has to offer with these delicious bread machine recipes below. And if you’re on the market for a bread machine, check out my comprehensive guide to picking the best bread machine for your needs.

FAQs

Is it cheaper to use a bread maker or buy bread? ›

Making bread from a machine is marginally cheaper than buying it, as long as you eat bread frequently enough to offset the cost of the appliance. Specifically, I see this as an investment that's smart for households that go through bread quickly, like large families or homes with multiple roommates.

What else can you cook in a bread maker? ›

What food can I make in a bread maker? The most obvious food you can make in a bread maker is bread, of course. Besides bread you can also make cake, jam, rice dishes, puddings, yogurt, scrambled eggs, meatloaf, sauces, soups, doughs for different purposes including pizza dough etc.

What is the best order to put ingredients in a bread machine? ›

You add the ingredients, and the bread machine makes and bakes the bread in one handy appliance. Liquid ingredients are added first, then oils or fats, dry ingredients, and finally yeast (if your recipe calls for it). The machine will mix, knead, rise, and bake the dough to a beautifully soft bread with a crisp crust.

What is the best flour for bread machines? ›

Most bread machine manuals and cookbooks call for bread flour rather than all-purpose flour. King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour, because it's higher in gluten than national brands of all-purpose flour, works perfectly in the bread machine.

Why are breadmakers no longer popular? ›

Some attribute the demise of the bread machine to the fact that cooks were just disappointed by their results. Lara Pizzorno, the author of Bread Machine Baking, chalked it up to food snobs who regarded the machine as “the electric equivalent of The Bridges of Madison County” in a 1996 article in The New York Times.

What is the disadvantage of bread maker? ›

Bread Machine Drawbacks

Harder to create different shaped breads (i.e. long baguettes). Upfront cost of a bread machine. Homemade bread usually goes stale faster than store packaged brands (because store breads often contain chemical preservatives). Inability to make very large bread sizes.

Does it matter what kind of yeast you use in a bread machine? ›

Bread machine yeast and rapid-rise yeast are specially formulated for the bread machine and become active more quickly than active dry yeast. You can use active dry yeast in your bread machine, but it should be dissolved in water before being used.

Do you put milk or water in a bread machine? ›

You will need a bit more milk than the amount of water required (because of the milk solids). The dough will be softer, the crumb less open.

When to add mix-ins to bread machine? ›

Use the fruit and nut cycle for bread with add-ins like fruits, nuts, cheese and so on. The machine will beep in 30 to 40 minutes after you've started it. This is when the extra ingredients are added.

What flour do professional bakers use for bread? ›

While bread flour is more than adequate for everyday breads, some professional bakers use high-gluten flour with a 14% protein content to provide extra strength to dense, chewy doughs like bagels and pizza dough. High-gluten bread flour gives milk bread it's taut structure and compact (but tender) crumb.

Why is my bread dense and heavy bread machine? ›

Short, Dense, and/or Dark Loaf

Cause: typical of too much flour (or other dry ingredients) or not enough liquid; less often a result of too little yeast, too little sugar, too much salt, or old ingredients. Here's what you can try doing to improve your loaf: Reduce your flour* or increasing your liquids.

Can you use all-purpose flour instead of bread flour in bread machine? ›

Yes! All-purpose flour has a 9% to 12% gluten content, while bread flour's gluten content falls in the 10% to 13% range. Even if your all-purpose flour lacks gluten, you can still use it in the bread machine. Again, the worst that will happen is that your bread will not rise as much as it would with bread flour.

Is it cheaper to make your own bread or buy it from the store? ›

The answer is yes — but only if you have time and space to bake a big batch at home. If you have a large family, it might be worthwhile to make your own bread, because it will save money and time. Homemade bread is also made with more nutritious ingredients and is healthier and better-tasting than store-bought loaves.

Is it expensive to run a bread maker? ›

Some are trying to beat the rise by using breadmakers. Most cost only around 6p an hour to run and ingredients are less than 40p – with a standard loaf at over £1. Paul Murphy, of Currys, said: “Many have turned to breadmakers to save money.”

How much does it cost to make a loaf of bread with a bread maker? ›

Baking a multigrain loaf from scratch using a breadmaker or oven will cost about $3 in ingredients alone, which doesn't include electricity. Fiona estimates about another 12 cents for energy, taking your homemade loaf to $3.12.

Is a bread maker more energy efficient? ›

And because a bread machine is also more energy efficient than a home oven, creating a lot less heat in the kitchen, it can be an ideal way to bake bread when you're dealing with a warm environment or even if, for some reason, you need to bake bread but don't have access to a full kitchen.
