Mango agua fresca is one of many refreshing Mexican beverages made with ripe fruit and is perfect for summer. Aguas frescas are a popular drink during hot weather or a refreshing treat anytime.

This Agua de mango It's so easy to make at home, too - just blend some fresh mango with water and a bit of sugar, and voila! A tasty and healthy drink that everyone will love.

In Mexico, we love to eat mangos just by themselves when they ripen and before they become sweet and golden. It is popular to find street vendors with Mangos not quite ripened with lime juice and ground hot dried pepper; this is a popular street food snack in Mexico (you can find a picture of that in one of my previous posts). Mangoes are one of my favorite summer fruits because they are delicious and because it brings back childhood memories. When I was about 6 or 7 years old, my cousin and I decided to climb a mango tree at my grandfather's house. While up there, we thought of picking unripe mangos and selling them on a hot summer day.

My grandpa just laughed and let us set up the table and try to sell the mangos. Of course, we didn't sell a single mango that day, and now that I think of it, we might have been better off selling Aguas Frescas instead of those unripe mangos! Too bad we didn’t think of that. Agua fresca is a refreshing and delicious drink popular in Mexico and many Latin American countries. It is typically made with ripped fresh mangos, water, and a sweetener like sugar cane, agave syrup, or stevia. Agua de mangs sometimes includes herbs or spices for added flavor. Some popular varieties of agua fresca include watermelon, horchata (rice drink), and jamaica (hibiscus). It is a perfect drink to cool down on a hot summer day and is a healthier alternative to sugary sodas and juices.

Is Mango agua fresca good for you?

Mango agua fresca is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, making it a healthy addition to any diet. It is rich in vitamin C and a good source of fiber, which can aid in digestion and promote feelings of fullness. So, yes, mango agua fresca can be good for you in moderation and better than soft drinks!

When is Mango Season?

Thanks to the tropical weather in Mexico, the mango season stretch from February to September. In the USA, mangos appear in grocery stores around May in various colors and sizes. If you live in the USA and make this “Mango Agua Fresca”, you will probably use mangos from Mexico. This is because most of the mangos sold in American supermarkets come from Mexico, a major mango producer. In fact, 23 of the 31 states in Mexico produce mangos! India, China, and the Philippines are other countries with large mangos productions.

How to store mango agua fresca

This Mango drink can last up to 3 days in your refrigerator if appropriately stored in a mason jar or container with a tight lid. Make sure you cover it well to prevent the drink from absorbing unwanted smells or flavors from other food in your refrigerator.

How to make Agua de Mango

To make this refreshing beverage, you only need a few simple ingredients:

  • Ripe mangos (Ataulfo Mangos are the best)
  • Sugar*
  • Water
  • Ice

Instructions:

  • Place the peeled & chopped mangos, sugar, and water in your blender. Process until you have a fine and smooth texture.

  • Pour in a large pitcher and add the ice cubes. Taste to check sweetness.

Notes:

  • I don’t like using too much sugar, but if you feel it needs more for your taste, add a few extra tablespoons. If you'd instead use honey instead of sugar, that is fine too.
  • I know mangoes come in many varieties; use your favorite mangos for this recipe.

How to choose a Mango

When selecting a mango, don't rely solely on its color and size, just like you would when buying an avocado or a peach. Despite the similar appearance of supermarket mangoes, there are numerous varieties with varying colors and shapes. To choose a mango, gently squeeze it.

A ripe mango will give slightly, a medium-ripe mango will be moderately firm, and an unripe mango will be very firm. It's important to note that mangos can be enjoyed at different stages of ripeness. Their flavor transitions from sour-tart when unripe to naturally sweet when fully ripe.

What to serve with Mango agua fresca

Mango agua fresca is an excellent beverage garnished with fresh mangos and mint springs. For a light meal, try my chipotle shrimp tacos or easy ceviche tostada, The light and fresh flavors of seafood make a delightful pairing with mango agua fresca.
