To make the cookie dough frosting:

  1. Heat treat your flour using the method described in our Edible Cookie Dough post.
  2. Use a stand mixer to mix together the regular butter and peanut butter until smooth.
  3. Then mix in the brown sugar, oats, vanilla, and flour.
  4. Finally, add the M&Ms and chocolate chips, powdered sugar, and Dino Stomp Sprinkles.
  5. Frost your cooled cupcakes. A cookie scoop works best!

The rough texture of this monster cookie frosting really makes it pop we think. This frosting recipe would not pipe well from a piping bag because of the chunky texture and bigger sized ingredients.

Monster Cookie Dough Cupcakes: Tips & Tricks

Got questions about this recipe? We’re sure we’ve got some answers for you! Check out some FAQs below…

The frosting is runny. What do I do?

Add more powdered sugar. That should do the trick!

The cupcakes are dry. What happened?

You may have left them in the oven too long and overbaked them. Be sure to check on them. Insert a toothpick in the center of one of the cupcakes and if it comes out clean, they’re done!

Can you substitute other nut butters if you don’t like or can’t have peanut butter?

We’ve heard that Nutella is also very tasty in this recipe, but haven’t tried it. Cashew butter and cookie butter are also ingredients we’ve seen!

Can I use other small chocolate candies rather than M&Ms?

Oh yes! Reese’s Pieces are very good, for example. Or just adding in a sub of mini chocolate chips will give it a different texture.

Would this frosting be good on other flavor cupcakes?

Due to both the cupcake batter AND frosting recipe having chunks of M&M’s and chocolate chips in them, a simpler cupcake batter might be desired. In this case, we would definitely recommend a peanut butter cupcake base with this frosting recipe!
